Offshore wind surges past 83 GW — and the best is yet to come

News

The latest Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) report reveals that, by the end of 2024, 83 GW of offshore wind capacity is now operational worldwide — enough to power 73 million homes. In addition, 48 GW are currently under construction, reinforcing the global commitment to the energy transition.

In 2024, 8 GW of new capacity were connected, marking the fourth-best year in the sector’s history, although down 26% compared to 2023. The industry remains strong: 56.3 GW were awarded through auctions, with another 100 GW expected to be tendered between 2025 and 2026.

The report points to a clear trend towards electrification, while highlighting the need to resolve infrastructure difficulties, speed up permitting, and improve policy stability to sustain momentum.
